YouTube thumbnail size today

For years, the advice was 1280 × 720 pixels. YouTube's help center now asks for the largest image you can provide and gives 3840 × 2160 as the resolution for video thumbnails. A 1280 × 720 thumbnail is still valid, since it is 16:9 and above the 640-pixel minimum width, but it is no longer the recommendation.

Two conditions apply to every custom thumbnail: the account must be verified, and the image must follow YouTube's Community Guidelines. YouTube can remove a thumbnail that breaks them, issue a strike, and remove custom thumbnail privileges for 30 days after repeat offenses.

Which canvas to use in MockupX

Watch the file size. YouTube's mobile upload limit is 2 MB, and a 3840 × 2160 PNG with a gradient and a detailed screenshot can easily exceed it. Export JPEG for large thumbnails, or upload from a computer, where the limit is 50 MB.

Choose one subject

A thumbnail should communicate its subject before anyone reads it. For product videos, the subject is the one interface state the video is about, shown large. A tutorial about filters shows the filter panel, not the whole app in a browser window. A comparison video shows the two results side by side, not two dashboards.

Worked example: a 12-minute video titled “Set up automated invoice reminders.” The thumbnail is a 16:9 canvas with the reminder settings dialog cropped tight and scaled to fill about 60% of the height, tilted slightly, with the words “Never chase an invoice” on the left. The full app, the sidebar and the browser chrome are gone.

Text: fewer words, larger type

Thumbnail text should add to the title, not repeat it. Two to four words usually suffice: the result, the tension or the number that makes the video worth watching. Because thumbnails are viewed small, a useful rule of thumb is to make the cap height of the main words at least 8 to 10% of the canvas height, about 60 to 70 px on a 720-tall canvas or 170 to 215 px on a 2160-tall one.

Keep the bottom-right corner clear

YouTube shows the video length in the lower-right corner of the thumbnail in most views, and other badges and progress bars can appear along the bottom edge. Keep the subject and any words away from that corner and from the bottom strip. If the device sits on the right of the composition, move it up so its lower edge does not collide with the timestamp.

Run the small-size test

Zooming in hides weak thumbnails. After exporting, view the image at about 320 pixels wide next to a few other thumbnails, roughly how it appears in a phone feed or the suggested-video column. If you cannot tell what the video is about in a second, remove detail rather than adding more.

• Can you name the product moment?
• Can you read every word without leaning in?
• Does it look different from the other thumbnails around it?
• Is anything important near the bottom-right corner?

Product thumbnails with frames and templates

The YouTube Browser template starts on the 1280 × 720 preset with a dark Chrome frame on a coral background, a good starting point for web app tutorials. For mobile apps, use an iPhone or Android frame with the Close crop or Tilt layouts so the screen fills more of the height. For desktop apps, the MacBook and Studio Display frames give context without a browser bar.

Shorts thumbnails

Shorts thumbnails are 9:16, with YouTube recommending 2160 × 3840 pixels and a minimum height of 640. YouTube's help center says custom Shorts thumbnails can currently only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer. In MockupX, start from the Story preset (1080 × 1920), or set a custom 2160 × 3840 canvas, and keep the subject in the middle third, since Shorts are shown with overlays at the top and bottom.
